New dairy feeder calf show

Posted on 6:24 AM by Unknown
Have you wanted to show cattle at the Fair, but haven't had the opportunity? Are full-grown animals just too large or expensive for you to show?

The Ohio State Fair's newest livestock show might just give you the chance.

New for 2014, the Fair will offer junior livestock exhibitors the opportunity to show dairy feeder calves. The show will run July 28 through 30 in the Cooper Arena during the 161st Fair.

The feeder calves that will be shown in the competition are typically born in February or March of 2014 and will weigh in between 300 and 600 pounds during the Fair, July 23 - August 3.

The cost to care for young calves is typically lower, making this show more accessible for young Ohioans. These animals are also smaller and easier to handle.

The Fair hopes that offering this show will allow new junior exhibitors who may have not previously entered livestock competitions at the State Fair to get the chance to participate, and hopefully take home a blue ribbon!

Entries will be limited to pure-bred Holstein, Red and White, and Brown Swiss dairy calves. Calves will not be sold at the conclusion of the show, and therefore may be entered in county or other livestock competitions following the Ohio State Fair. Information on how to enter can be found online at ohiostatefair.com. Entries must be submitted online or by mail no later than June 20.

High school juniors and seniors during the current (2013-2014) academic year, as well as recent high school graduates who are continuing their education at an accredited institution in an undergraduate course of study in any field, are eligible to apply.

Funds for the program come from the dollars received over a cap that is placed on the amount an exhibitor can receive from the Sale of Champions. The funds from the program are distributed among carcass contests, scholarships, outstanding market exhibitor program, outstanding breeding exhibitor program, showmanship, skillathons, 4-H and FFA. Trick rider Shadow Lane Montag thrills and inspires

Posted on 7:46 AM by Unknown
Talented trick horseback rider Shadow Lane Montag will amaze audiences at the Ohio State Fair with his superb riding skills and inspiring comeback story. Alongside his drill team, Montag will perform at noon in the JD Equipment Taft Coliseum on Saturday, August 3.
With a professional bull rider as a father and a rodeo manager for a mother, Montag was introduced to the world of trick riding at a young age. In March of 2012, Montag was thrown from his horse in an accident, suffering traumatic brain injuries when he landed on his head and neck. After being resuscitated twice while being life-flighted to the nearest trauma hospital, doctors said he only had a 10 percent chance of survival.
After making a full recovery, Montag has returned to trick riding. He has also used his talent to make huge contributions to charitable organizations. Two of his national tours have been dedicated to raising money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Additionally, Montag has made significant donations to Autism Speaks and recently raised more than $40,000 for Relay for Life in Belmont County.
Don't miss Montag's amazing trick riding show, today, August 3 at noon in the JD Equipment Taft Coliseum!

The Fair to Host STEM Workshop

Posted on 12:33 PM by Unknown
A three-day Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Workshop will be conducted for teachers in training and college elementary education majors at the Ohio State Fair starting July 30 and lasting through Aug. 1. Daily sessions are from 9:30 am - 3:00 pm in the Adobe Buildingand focus on K-6 curriculum.

The STEM Workshop is part of the Technology and Engineering Showcase and the Ohio Technology and Engineering Educators Association. It works to help educators apply standards-based science concepts into the classroom by focusing on essential questions and related activities. The STEM workshop also provides hands-on engineering and technological design based lessons using inexpensive materials.

The STEM workshop explores four essential concepts: survival of organisms in their environment, force and motion, the protection of natural resources and the usage of different types of energy. Related activities include butterfly incubators, paper engineering, solar cookers and sail cars!

The Ohio State Fair is proud to be home of the STEM workshop, which helps develop elementary educators from generalists to specialists.
